About Katy Lou’s
Katylou’s and Littlelou’s Music and Movement are fun filled, fast paced sessions providing children with the opportunity to move, improve fine and gross motor skills, build co-ordination, confidence and core strength which directly effects their ability to learn and undertake simple tasks such as sitting still, holding a pencil, putting on their shoes and especially reading.
Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences recently conducted a study in which they tested foundation stage children from different schools, finding that 90% showed a degree of movement difficulty, with many experiencing problems with balance and co-ordination which are impacting their ability to learn in class. They also found that up to 30% of children are starting school with symptoms generally associated with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD.
Gross motor skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large (core) muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing, walking, running, and sitting upright. It also includes eye-hand co-ordination skills such as throwing, catching, kicking. These are crucial for everyday self care skills like dressing, where you need to be able to stand on one leg to put your your pants, socks, trousers or tights on without falling over!
Core strength is essential for a child to maintain table top posture, which affects their ability to utilise fine motor skills such as writing, drawing and cutting as well as sitting upright to attend to class instruction, which then impacts on their academic learning and ability to cope with a full day of school.
